Hello everyone:

We have been gone for a while because, frankly, not much has been going on, and we have moved a lot of our info to Facebook.

However, with the new 2012 tour hopefully being announced soon, and a new (the last?) album being released in the next few months, things should heat up a bit.

Monday morning we expect the Houston Rodeo to announce their full entertainment lineup. They will be having at least one or two classic rock acts and we hope ZZ will be one of them. If so, we will be heading to Tejas for the show, and for any possible warmup shows.

Hopefully we will be able to set up a few extra-special things for those who want to join the festivities.

New song Titlezzz

Gibson.com has quoted Billy Gibbons from an article in Mojo magazine (?)
as providing further details on the new album, including song titles and
producers, to be released in 2011:

ZZ Top's new album is now finished, being mixed, and will be released
in the fall of 2011. Billy Gibbons tells Mojo magazine, "It sounds and
feels like Tres Hombres, with a few elements of the Eliminator period
thrown in. A pretty wide range, from basic blues to slightly more fancy
stuff.

Songs recorded include "Flyin' High," "More Slower Blues." "Chartreuse"
and "Have A Little Mercy." The latter is, says Gibbons, inspired by
early B.B. King cuts.

The sessions have been executive-produced by Rick Rubin (Red Hot Chili
Peppers, Johnny Cash, Metallica, etc). Gibbons adds, "The thing about
Rick is he pushes the artists to spend more time reaching down deeper
than they normally would."

ZZ top recorded at the famous Shangri La Studios in Malibu with
engineeer Dave Sardy (Oasis, Jet). The trio then moved back to Texas, to
Foam Box Recordings in Houston, with long-time engineer Joe Hardy. "It
was the Sardy and Hardy party," said Gibbons.

A version of "Flyin' High," which is not confirmed for the album, has
already debuted: played en-route to the International Space Station on
Russia's Soyuz spacecraft. "We figured it'd be the perfect song to pass
along to the astronauts," said Gibbons.

Not every song will be as as radio-friendly as "Flyin' High", insists
Billy. "More Slower Blues" is "simply one chord, that never stops."

ZZ Top have yet to reveal the album's title and its final tracklisting.

Our friends at the Antenna Head News blog have found a new song by ZZ Top, their first new material in eight years-- that has been debuted by NASA in outer space! A bit of news. Apparently Billy is in talks to host a reality show about competitive beard and mustache competitors.

Also, a fall concert date has been announced by the venue for Fresno California in early
October. Still no summer or spring dates in the US though.

Looks like the Boyzz may be booking festivals and the like for another summer tour of Europe. With the Oz tour and alleged recording of a new album, are we even going to see them this year in the U.S?

Only one date in France has popped up so far, but expect others to follow. Check last.fm which is a great source for European dates.

They found Dusty's hat! OK, that's true, but it's not the big newzz. Billy G is endorsing this new Pura Vida Tequila and doing some bottle signings. OK, that's not the big newzz. The big newzz is that Billy claimed at one of those signings that the band goes into the studio with Rick Rubin TOMORROW (ie January 31, 2011) to start tracking the new album.

Now, we have no way of knowing if this is true or another Texas Tall Tale, but it is an encouraging sign. No upcoming tour + Billy spending a lot of time in Texas + Rubin wanting to record in Texas are all good signs. They have from now until about April to crank something out, possibly do a few Texas warm-up shows, then on to Australia for a short tour.

After more than a month of waiting, ZZ Top's bassist and vocalist, Dusty
Hill, is ready to get his beloved Stetson back. Hill's hat went missing
a few hours before ZZ Top's concert at the Ector County Coliseum Dec. 9.

"You travel all over the world and then it comes up missing in Texas,"
Hill said. "It just killed me."

In an attempt to recover his hat, Hill and the ZZ Top team are offering
up a $150 reward to spend at the ZZ Top merchandise website to the
person who currently has the Stetson.

"We're going to give that person the key to the ZZ Top website," Bob
Merlis, ZZ Top's publicist, said.

Merlis said there will be no questions asked of the person, and they can
even remain anonymous.

Hill has worn his Stetson, trimmed with a ribbon of black horse hair, to
most of the shows for the past two ZZ Top tours. Fans at the Coliseum,
however, may have noticed that instead of the cowboy hat, Hill wore a
baseball cap.

The day of the concert started out normally for Hill, spending that
Thursday afternoon performing a sound check with the rest of the band
and crew. Shortly thereafter, Hill went back to his hotel room, leaving
his hat in his dressing room. He returned later to find the hat gone.

"About 30 minutes before the show, my hat's (still) not there. Everyone
was scrambling around trying to find it," Hill said.

Hill said he tried looking again after the concert, but the search
turned up empty, and Hill left Odessa the next morning, hatless.

"Dusty Hill walked into Ector County Coliseum wearing his hat, and when
he left the hat was gone," Merlis said. "It sounds silly, but it's a big
drag separating a Texan from his favorite hat - that's harsh."

Hill's attachment to the hat is reasonable, considering the fact that
it's was custom made for him when he had a cameo appearance on the third
season of HBO's "Deadwood."

"I went and had one made by the people who do that show. It's not shaped
like your everyday rodeo hat, it's more round," Hill said.

Hill hopes that the person in possession of his Stetson will return the
hat as soon as possible. He even wants to thank the person, should they
choose to return it.

"The thing is, if I were that person, I wouldn't get my satisfaction out
of wearing it or showing it to people under the circumstances," Hill
said. "It's not going to create a lot of enjoyment in their hands."

Two nuggets of news: First, ZZ was apparently supposed to play a 175th
Anniversary concert to raise funds for the Alamo, but that has been
cancelled.

Second, Billy has invested in a tequila company, and while being
interviewed he stated that they had not yet worked with Rick Rubin but
were slated to go into the rehearsal studio in about a week. For a new
album? For the 2011 tour? Who knows. But at least something is
happening.

Finally, the full Houston Rodeo entertainment lineup will be announced at 10 am on Monday morning, so we should see if ZZ are playing this year at that time.

This has been floating around the web today, check it out:

(hennemusic) Aerosmith's Steven Tyler recently jammed with Camp Freddy in Los Angeles. During the jam Mick Fleetwood popped behind the drum kit as Tyler took center stage for the Fleetwood Mac track, "Rattlesnake Shake."
Then, Tyler and band jammed the Aerosmith classic, "Sweet Emotion," before closing out the show with Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love."

But that isn't the only collaboration the two have embarked on. In a new interview, Fleetwood spills the beans on the two rock legends working together. "Steven and Johnny Lang and John McVie and I are doing a track on a new tribute album for ZZ Top," Mick tells the Maui News. "We all got together and we had a ball."

2011 and Beyond!

Merry Christmas to those of you who are still reading the once-in-a-while updates to this blog. Apaprently no one in Odessa Texas has the Internet because no set list has turned up anywhere (although there is some YouTube video out there.)

I think we are all going to have a very Happy New Year, things should be very busy in ZZ Top-Land.

A new album? Perhaps.

Touring Australia and New Zealand? Most certainly.

A lengthy U.S. Tour, with cheaper ticket prices? Definitely.

Some cool shows in Japan or someplace? Possible.

zztop.com updated more than once every three months? Not very likely.

Another surprise-filled appearance at the Houston Rodeo? I hope so, we should find out no later than January 10, if they are playing it may leak a day or two before then.

If the play the Rodeo, we will be there. If they do any west coast warm-up shows before the Aussie tour, we will be there. If they play in Europe this summer, we will be there. We will be everywhere!

If anyone has the scoop on additional December/Christmas shows, please
let us know. Other than the Odessa (December 9, 2010) show we have
heard a rumor of December 4 in the Dallas area but nothing more for
December. No confirmation yet on the Houston Rodeo next year, either,
which, if it's gonna happen, will probably be on March 15.

ZZ Top to tour Australia in 2011???

Well, it's just a rumor, but a pretty specific one: An Australian paper
is reporting the ZZ Top may play some shows in Australia in April 2011.
If that is true, maybe some additional Asian shows as well?

OK, the Tom Petty tour is over and the Boyzz are back in Europe again. We had hoped to make some of these shows but it looks like that may not be possible now.

If anyone is going to the European shows, please send us a report. We know a few of the regulars will be there, so far it seems like the set list is unchanged. Billy appears to be using a new guitar. No further details yet.

So, what's next after they finish up this very brief tour in Europe. Work on the new album? Do some Christmas shows as they traditionally do in Colorado or Florida? We'll keep out eyes and ears open.

For those of you who doubt that ZZ Top is working on a new album...

Is it true? We have heard that our Lil' Ol Band from Texas, USA, them ZZ TOPS will be playing their first ever shows in Russia this October...specifically October 27 in St. Petersburg!

This is very exciting, I hope that a Moscow date is also announced soon! Where else will they go on this tour? Poland perhaps?

It's (almost) Official -- ZZ Top returns to Europe October 2010

There may not be any official announcement for some time, but tickets have now actually gone on sale for the October 16 Paris Bercy date, so it appears that the October European tour (just like last year, nice time to visit) is officially on.

We had great fun at three different shows this week but, as always, we are looking for info on the future. Does anyone have a hint as to where they are playing this October after their dates poening for Tom Petty have been completed?

We have heard two rumors, that they are either heading over to Australia or that they are going back to Europe, with a rumored (or mistaken?) date of Paris Bercy on October 16.

Anyone have any clue?

M3 Festival here we come!

If the weather cooperates, we will be headed east tonight for the M3
Rock Festival at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Maryland. The Scorpions
are headlining (only their second show so far in the U.S. on their
"farewell" tour) and we're looking forward to Cinderella, Kix, etc etc.

Next week we should be seeing ZZ Top at least three times, so stay tuned
for set lists and reviews.

Well, some good reports and video are showing up from South America. It
looks like Francine is back in the set, sometimes half in Spanish. (In
recent years they have been doing it half in Spanish but early in this
tour it was all in English.)

It looks like they replaced Beer Drinkers (which was played in Atlanta)
with Francine, possibly to have at least one Spanish sogn in S.A.?
Thunderbird is apapretnly out of the set for good.

My Head's in Mississippi has been showing up on set lists but I assume
this is just the intro? Anyone have video or audio to confirm? What is
on YouTube already indicates they are just playing the intro as usual
but who knows.

The band finished up in in Argentina last night and plays at the
Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Friday.

Fall touring planzz changed

We had heard that all of the September and October ZZ Top tour dates had been moved or cancelled, and now we appear to know why...the band will be on tour as an opening act for Tom Petty in September and October because of a cancellation by Joe Cocker.

As always, subject to change, but that's the plan for now. Not sure exactly which shows are cancelled yet, hopefully there will be an official announcement on zztop.com soon.

2010 Tour Is Almost Here!

I've been out of the country and have also been a bit sick so blog updates have been scarce but the thought of the 2010 tour starting this week in Tejas has revitalized me a bit. Barbecue and the Top, a perfect weekend in the Lone Star State. Hopefully I will be able to make it to the Tyler and Beaumont shows, if anyone else is going please give me a holler.

Looks like the boooking agents have been busy. We have heard about posible dates in the Spring in the U.S., possibly as a warm-up for the South American tour. Here is what we have tentatively been able to put together:

Can someone out there let us know if ZZ is still playing Crossroads? They are not listed on Pollstar or zztop.com for that show, but zztop.com does list the second Tom Petty show at Summerfest on June 26.

Summerfest just announced ZZ will play a second show with Tom Petty on
June 26...which is interesting because they are scheduled to play in
Chicago that day at Crossroads.

Is this a mistake, or are they actually going to play two shows in one

We have tried to keep our concert "rumors" section (see post below) updated and we think we have everything that has been sent to us so far. Some of these dates are only rumors so far but they are pretty well-sourced. We still find it hard to believe that they will play in Buenos Aires on May 26 and headline Rocklahoma on May 28 but we'll see.

This schedule is pushing it pretty hard for the band, we hope it's not too much for them to handle.

Newest additions are California and Florida.

Houston Rodeo 2010?

The next big event to look for is the Houston Rodeo. It is our guess,
based on past experience, that ZZ Top will not be playing this year, but
at least one Houston-area music blogger has implied that they will. We
kinda doubt that since they usually don't play two years in a row and
there do not appear to be any "classic rock" days on the calendar, but
thye don't have anything else currently booked, you never know. We
should hear something either way in the next week or two as the Rodeo
makes their final announcements.

Well, someone at zztop.com has woken up and finally announced the High Voltage festival headlining date, along with the South American tour, which they list for May (not March) 2010. We only beat them to the scoop by a week, that's better than they have been.

Anywhooo since both of these tours are now confirmed we ask our readers to let us know when any new dates are announced in their areas.

New European Tour set for Summer 2010

OK, on the heels of the (unconfirmed) postponement of the (unconfirmed) 2009 South American Tour, our sources tell us that ZZ Top may be doing yet another European tour (weak dollar--let's go to Europe!) in the Summer of 2010. A London festival date is already rumored, who knows what else will be out there.

So the year for ZZ could look something like this:

March 2010--South America (rumored Sao Paulo [March 10, 2010])
July 2010--Europe (rumored London [July 24. 2010])
August 2010--USA (confirmed for Sturgis [August 9, 2010] and Wisconsin Dells [August 7, 2010])

ZZ Top Brazil and South American Tour Postponed?

Supposedly ZZ Top's (never officially announced) South American tour that was originally scheduled for December 2009 has been pushed back to March 2010 because their European set (which was going to be shipped to S.A. for the shows) was somehow damaged. Sounds funny but with this band you never know what's going on.

Bill Narum R.I.P.

Sad news in ZZ land, Bill Narum passed away. Bill worked with the band for many many years, and designed many of their classic album covers and tour backdrops. He also was the first webmaster for the official ZZ Top web site, and still ran the scrawl board at z-2-z.com.

Bill was always happy to talk with ZZ fans from around the world, and was even gracious enough to provide his original artwork, free of charge, for the recent ZZ Top Fanzz tribute cd.

He will be missed by many.

Rumor has it that the band -- maybe not the whole band, but at least
Billy Gibbons -- will be playing at the CMAs this Wednesday, likely with

Just a reminder for all of our U.S. readers to check out the NASCAR race from Texas right now on ABC. The Boyzz played a pre-race concert and they already showed footage on tv of a few of the songs. They also gave the "Genmtlemen, start your engines" instruction to begin the race. They will probably be interviewed during the race as well.
